We were looking to appoint architects with a passion for and experience in listed buildings. We contacted a number of firms prior to deciding on Tarpey Woodfine to design and manage the renovation of our Grade Two listed home in Eccleshall, Staffordshire. Designed by Victorian architect G.E. Street, the property was originally built for use as a Church of England school in 1862. Since then it has undergone several changes of use and has been significantly altered structurally to accommodate these changes. Our brief was to renovate the property, reduce the number of rooms downstairs, and create a contemporary open plan living space.  Tarpey Woodfine had the vision to design a space which met our brief both functionally and aesthetically. The whole process was managed professionally and conscientiously. Tarpey Woodfine conducted their own measured survey, drew up designs and submitted our proposal to the council for listed building consent. This was granted first time around saving us time and money. Tarpey Woodfine then studiously managed the tender process from which we selected our preferred builder, A J Field. Our project involved a 6 month build during which our family moved into rented accommodation. Tarpey Woodfine helped us negotiate with our contractor, managed our expectations and held our hand throughout. Monthly site meetings helped us keep abreast of any issues which arose, enabling us to manage our budget effectively and making the whole process as stress free as possible. Thanks to Tarpey Woodfine we now have a beautiful family home and a little piece of beautifully preserved English history which we are extremely proud to own.

It has been a pleasure working with Tarpey Woodfine on a recent, complex, Listed Building Refurbishment and Extension Project. As a building contractor it is refreshing to work with an Architects practice that balances design requirements and practical solutions, whilst looking after the client’s best interests. The efficient contract management and good working relationship led to a very successful outcome for all parties.

Tarpey Woodfine helped me obtain planning and listed building consent on what was proving to be a troublesome property. Their knowledge of heritage and conservation, coupled with their design skills and planning experience have helped restore a significant listed building and create a thriving new business.

The local Methodist Church, through various Circuits, has instructed Tarpey Woodfine on a number of projects across the District and will continue to do so. They have scoped the potential for development and then made application for planning permission. Often additional development value has been realised. Throughout their approach has been commercial but personable and we will certainly instruct them on similar projects in the future
